For the most part, as little girls we are pre-programmed to imagine ourselves gracefully sauntering down the aisle in a gorgeous, flowing gown. We’ve all been there, wrapped up in a white sheet with a pillow case veil perfectly positioned atop our heads, contemplating what our day and our dress should look like. And, Stella Sach, owner of Bridal Collections by Stella, watches that transformation from little-girl-with-a-dream to glowing bride-to-be, on a daily basis.
"Today, brides are leaning more towards form-fitting gowns and away from traditional ball gowns," says Stella. Many of her clients right now adore personalized trends such as ornamental detailing and silk flowers, one-shoulder styles, and the elegant lace gowns that are making a come back. Modern brides are also opting for sleek, more structured bodices in a range of shades and colors other than white. "Candlelight, champagne and silver dresses are extremely popular right now," she says. Another trend she recognizes in bridal fashion is changing from a long veil for the ceremony to a shorter French net style headpiece or headband for the reception.
Bridesmaid gowns, both long and short, are favored in softer materials as well, such as silk chiffon and jersey rather than silk taffeta and shantung, although the latter are still very popular. "And, girls are loving shorter gowns with pockets right now," Stella says. Many brides think that because it’s an evening wedding, their maids must wear long gowns, but that’s simply not the case. Non-conformist by nature, Stella adds, "protocols of the past should not be a factor for today’s contemporary bride. No one is going to stop you at the door and demand to know why your bridesmaids aren’t wearing full length dresses!" Aubergine, hydrangea blue and coral are the colors attracting wedding parties at the moment, she mentions.
The point is that the modern bride can have exactly what she wants, says Stella. And why not? It’s the day you’ve dreamt of all your life, so make it your own.
